The latest Top Connecticut Hedge Fund List has been released, revealing that the top 50 hedge funds oversee a combined $171.8 billion in US equities. Overall, the hedge funds on the list saw their assets grow by just $1.2 billion, or 0.7% quarter-over-quarter. While several hedge funds faltered over the quarter, strong gains from Viking Global Investors, JAT Capital Management and Impala Asset Management helped keep things steady.

The largest Connecticut hedge funds on the list are Clifford Asness’ AQR Capital, Andreas Halvorsen’s Viking Global Investors and Steve Mandel’s Lone Pine Capital. Viking Global’s strong asset gains over the quarter (+$2.4B), enabled it to steal the #2 spot away from Lone Pine Capital.

New Canaan-based Impala Asset Management secured the 12th spot on the list, after seeing its assets jump by $600M over the quarter. The long/short global equity fund is led by Robert Bishop, who founded the firm in 2003, after having previously been the CIO of equity investments at Soros Fund Management and a Principal at Maverick Capital.

John Thaler’s JAT Capital Management finally cracked the top 10, landing at the number 9 spot on the list, after seeing its assets surge by nearly $750 million. 80.8% of JAT Capital’s assets are invested in technology, media and telecom equities, placing the firm at #8 on the Top TMT Hedge Fund List. Before founding JAT, John Thayer was a founding member and Portfolio Manager covering the technology, media and telecom (TMT) sectors at Shumway Capital Partners.

Twenty-eight hedge funds on the Top Connecticut Hedge Fund List are based in the suburban hedge fund enclave of Greenwich, CT. While Greenwich is the location of choice, Stamford and Westport are notably home to eight and five of the top 50 hedge funds, respectively.
