Top 50 California Hedge Funds up more than 10% for the quarter; ValueAct Capital and SPO Advisory still on top

ValueAct Capital Management, a GARP investor based in San Francisco, retains the top spot on the Top California Equity Hedge Fund List yet again with $12.1 billion in equity assets, up more than 9% for the quarter. SPO Advisory Corp maintained the second spot on the list and reversed its drop over the previous quarter by gaining 5%. Mill Valley-based SPO Advisory Corp. is headed by John Scully and William E. Oberndorf and reported $7.2 billion in assets.

In aggregate, the Top 50 Hedge Funds from California oversee more than $77 billion in US equities. Over the last quarter, 40 of the top 50 saw an increase in assets, including 9 of the top 10.

Rounding out the top three is Partner Fund Management with $5.4 billion in equity assets. Partner Fund Management is a San Francisco-based hedge fund started in 2004 by Christopher James that saw assets jump more than 20% in the fourth quarter.

Farallon Capital Management fell to fourth on the list from the third spot last quarter after reporting a minor decline in equity assets to $4.6 billion. Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors holds the final top 5 slot for another quarter with $3.6 billion in assets.

There was limited turnover on this quarter’s list with only two funds dropping out of the top 50. New entrant TMT-focused Light Street Capital Management landed at #39 on this quarter’s list with $470 million in equity assets, while San Francisco Sentry Investment Group snuck into the final spot after reporting $289 million in equity assets.
