The Hedge Fund Journal and Ernst & Young LLP have put together a joint survey that showcases the top 40 hedge fund managers of the next generation. Tomorrow’s Titans: Blue Chip Managers for the Next Decade identifies the leading figures who are sure to play a role in the future of the hedge fund industry. “Tomorrow’s Titans is by no means a definitive guide but it does uncover a generation of managers that will be prominent in leading the hedge fund industry over the next decade,” commented The Hedge Fund Journal editor Bill McIntosh in a press release. “The survey shows conclusively that there is a broad range of talent across the hedge fund industry that is serving investors well and will continue to do so in the years ahead.”

After extensive research conducted by The Hedge Fund Journal, the survey identified a long list of candidates for the top 40 slots. Managers were nominated by leading figures across the investment industry, including investment consultants, pension funds and endowments, service providers, funds of hedge funds, and wealthy individuals. Many of the nominees began their careers in major investment banks like Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley and Lehman Brothers, but others started out in smaller regional banks. A large portion of the nominees later “left bulge bracket funds to go solo, while some are holding key positions with the largest funds.”

The investment styles of the final 40 managers cover a broad range of strategies, but arbitrage managers are far and few between and the growing “alternatives to alternatives” space was left unrepresented altogether. The majority of the top 40 all trade in broad, directional and liquid asset classes that performed relatively well in 2008: macro, commodities, equities and credit. Emerging and frontier markets were not covered by the survey.
