The 20 most profitable hedge funds earned more than $55 billion for investors in 2013, according to a study conducted by LCH Investments NV. The study results, as reported by Bloomberg News, had Lone Pine Capital LLC topping the list for the second year in a row with $5.2 billion followed by Viking Global Investors with $4.5 billion and Appaloosa Management LP with $4.2 billion. All three hedge funds reaped big gains with individual stock bets while the average hedge fund again failed to outperform the S&P 500 index.

The study also ranked the underperformers which included Bridgewater Associates LP’s Pure Alpha fund, and Brevan Howard Asset Management LLP’s Master Fund. Soros Fund Management LLC’s flagship Quantum Endowment fund led all fund gains with $5.5 billion.
