Largest Energy Hedge Funds hold nearly $101 billion in Energy assets; Harvest Fund Advisors retains position as largest Energy dedicated fund

The Top Energy Hedge Funds list has been released, revealing that the largest hedge fund investors in Energy companies manage more than $100.8 billion in energy assets. This quarter’s list is led by D.E. Shaw & Co which reported $7.9B in energy assets, representing 15% of its equity assets under management.

13 of the hedge funds on this quarter’s list devoted more than 75% of their equity assets to Energy, including Arosa Capital Management LP (#35, 98% of assets invested in Energy) and Caymus Capital Partners (#50, 98%).

NYC-based Arosa Capital Management was founded in 2013 and is also among the top ranked Emerging Hedge Fund Managers. Arosa Capital’s top three holdings Baker Hughes ($57M, ticker: BHI), FMC Technologies ($57M, FTI) and EOG Resources ($52M, EOG) comprise 26% of its equity assets.

Caymus Capital Partners has concentrated portfolio of only 22 securities, which are focused on the upstream oil and gas sub-sector of the energy market. Caymus’ top Energy holdings include: EQT Corp ($52M, EQT), Continental Resources ($47M, CLR) and SM Energy Company ($38M, SM).

The highest ranking “pure-Energy” investor is once again Harvest Fund Advisors LLC at #4. Harvest Fund is based in suburban Philadelphia and focuses on emergent opportunities in energy infrastructure master limited partnerships (MLPs) and US energy markets. Harvest invests through pooled investment vehicles and separately managed accounts, with the majority of its AUM coming from institutional investors including public pension plans, corporate plans, endowments, and foundations. Harvest Fund holds 70 securities, the majority of which are in Oil & Gas Pipelines. The most significant Energy holdings include: Enterprise Product Partners ($830M, EPD), Energy Transfer Partners ($551, ETP), Energy Transfer Equity ($475M, ETE), and Plains All American Pipeline ($428M, PAA).
