Hedge Funds gain 3.50% in September; Paulson, Renaissance and others outperform

|The Hennessee Hedge Fund Index was up +3.50% during September, while the S&P 500 gained +8.76% and the Dow advanced +7.72%. Henessee’s Long/Short Equity, Arbitrage/Event Driven, and Global/Macro Indices were all up at least +2.66%. Hennessee’s co-founder Charles Gradante commented, “Hedge funds had their best month since May of 2009 and continue to outperform the broad market year to date.” |
Several top hedge funds’ September numbers surpassed Hennessee’s positive results. Paulson & Co’s $9 billion Advantage Plus fund was up +12.4% for the month and Singapore-based Merchant Commodity Fund advanced +14.9%. Janchor Partners’ Pan Asian Fund was up +6% in September, and Clive Capital’s $4 billion Clive Fund Ltd. gained +6.6%. Renaissance Technologies, James Simon’s $8 billion quant hedge fund, advanced +8%.
