The Hennessee Hedge Fund Index was up +3.50% during September, while the S&P 500 gained +8.76% and the Dow advanced +7.72%. Henessee’s Long/Short Equity, Arbitrage/Event Driven, and Global/Macro Indices were all up at least +2.66%. Hennessee’s co-founder Charles Gradante commented, “Hedge funds had their best month since May of 2009 and continue to outperform the broad market year to date.”

Several top hedge funds’ September numbers surpassed Hennessee’s positive results. Paulson & Co’s $9 billion Advantage Plus fund was up +12.4% for the month and Singapore-based Merchant Commodity Fund advanced +14.9%. Janchor Partners’ Pan Asian Fund was up +6% in September, and Clive Capital’s $4 billion Clive Fund Ltd. gained +6.6%. Renaissance Technologies, James Simon’s $8 billion quant hedge fund, advanced +8%.

Hennessee’s Long/Short Equity Index gained +3.91% last month as equity markets benefitted from greater investor confidence with gains in all ten sectors, led by technology. “While managers are concerned about elevated macro economic risks, we are beginning to see growing optimism about the equity markets in the short term,” stated Mr. Gradante. “The Federal Reserve is determined to create growth and inflation, benefitting equities, which look attractive relative to other asset classes.”
