Activist investors more than lived up to their reputations in 2012 with a wave of board invasions that have led to dozens of high-profile shakeups. As reported by the Financial Times, Activist hedge funds in general outperformed the MSCI World Index and the S&P 500 Index through the first three quarters of 2012. Knight Vinke, Governance for Owners and Cevian Capital are among the leading activist investors that comprise the Activist Insight Index.

Among the more high profile activist achievements was the board shakeup at Yahoo led by Third Point’s Daniel Loeb, and the ousting of Legg Mason CEO Mark Fetting by Nelson Peltz’s Trian Fund Management.
