The rankings for the Top Connecticut Hedge Funds have been released, revealing that the top 50 hedge funds oversee a combined $174 billion in equity assets. Overall, the hedge funds on the list have seen their assets grow by more than $3 billion, or nearly 1.8% year-to-date.

The largest Connecticut hedge funds on the list are Clifford Asness’ AQR Capital, Steve Mandel’s Lone Pine Capital and Andreas Halvorsen’s Viking Global Investors. Lone Pine Capital’s strong asset gains over the quarter (+$2.1B), enabled it to steal the #2 spot away from Viking Global.

While several of the top hedge funds have faltered year-to-date, strong gains by the three largest funds, as well as JAT Capital Management, have helped steady the ship. John Thaler’s JAT Capital Management claimed the 10th spot on this quarter’s list, after having seen its equity assets surge by nearly $1.3 billion year-to-date. 79% of JAT Capital’s assets are invested in technology, media and telecom equities, placing the firm at #9 on the Top TMT Hedge Fund List. Before founding JAT, John Thayer was a founding member and Portfolio Manager covering the technology, media and telecom (TMT) sectors at Shumway Capital Partners.

Another sector focused fund on the list is Greenwich-based Oracle Investment Management, which claimed the 27th spot. 93% of Oracle Investment’s assets are invested in healthcare, pharma and biotech equities, placing the firm at #28 on the Top 50 Healthcare, Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Equity Focused Hedge Fund List.

Twenty-seven hedge funds on the Top Connecticut Hedge Fund List are based in the suburban hedge fund enclave of Greenwich, CT. While Greenwich is the location of choice, Stamford and Westport are notably home to nine and five of the top 50 hedge funds, respectively.
